The Mets open up a three game set tonight in L.A. to take on a red hot Dodger team that just won 8 in a row before losing to Colorado yesterday. The Mets try and keep up their winning ways after taking 2 of 3 from Arizona and their big bats continue to heat up.
The Mets will throw Oliver Perez tonight, as he tries to bounce back from his worst performance of the year last Wednesday allowing 7 runs in 1 1/3 innings. Perez is on a personal 2 game losing streak.
The Dodgers counter with Chad Billingsley, who recorded his first win of the season last time out after losing 4 straight starts.

Mets Discussing Turnbow:
The Mets are discussing whether to sign reliever Derrick Turnbow, recently designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers. … Catcher Ramon Castro is running, but his hamstring is still not 100 percent. … Orlando Hernandez’s right foot is still in a support boot. He will be re-examined this week in New York. … Reported by Journal news
Olney’s Latest: Nady, Delgado
- He thinks that Xavier Nady could fit with the Mets or the Indians, but notes that the Pirates are sitting tight for now, hoping to compete this year. They’ll be singing a different tune in July.
- Olney goes on to speculate that the Mets could release Carlos Delgado if he continues his weak hitting. Nady would seem a decent replacement, though he hasn’t played first since 2006. Scott Hatteberg could be another option.
Yanks Eyeing Derek Lowe For ‘09?
According to Tony Massarotti of the Boston Herald:There are already indications that the New York Yankees will be among Derek Lowe’s suitors during the offseason.
He mainly discusses Lowe’s leverage given his unique durability. Scott Boras should be able to get him at least three years and $39MM. Does he make sense for the Yankees? Could he succeed back in the AL East for his age.

Bringing a little culture to the SportsBlog, we’ll shift things over to Hockey for a minute or two. The Pitt. Penguins finally drove that last nail into the NY Rangers Stanley Cup hopes with their OT win yesterday afternoon. The player of the game: Penguins GM Ray Shero; as his trade deadline acquisition of the annual 90 point Forward, Marian Hossa, proved to be the difference putting the puck in the net twice in the final game of the series.
The Rangers inability to pickup anything more than a 4th line Forward and 3rd line Defenseman at the trade deadline left them helpless on Powerplays and overall unable to keep up with the Penguins. The result, while bad for my heart and peace of mind, is best for the NHL as its most recognized player and supposed “savior” Sidney Crosby can continue his journey for the cup, along with the continuing press coverage he’s bringing to the sport that just gets no lovin anymore.
Looking forward, the state of Pennsylvania is in for some barn-burners as Pittsburgh will face Philadelphia Flyers in the Eastern Conference Finals. Pittsburgh was really one of the only Eastern Conference Playoff teams that has the tools to go toe-to-toe with any of the Western Conference teams. To battle the West you need amazing end-to-end speed, a legitimate on-the-fly passing game, and the talent to put the puck in the net. The Penguins now have 3 of the most recent #1 draft picks as seasoned players in Crosby, Malkin (FWD & 2007-08 League MVP Finalist) & Fleury (G). Line them up with Hossa, Sykora, and Roberts and you’ll quickly find yourself down for the count.
Prediction: Penguins in 5.
The series to watch for this round is the West’s Red Wings vs. Stars. The Stars just came off almost letting a 3 - 0 game lead slip to the Sharks but closed the series 4 games to 2 with their amazing 7 periods of play (won in 4th OT) last night. The Red Wings have had plenty of rest finishing their series early last week.
Prediction: Red Wings in 6.
Yank Me

Well the Yankees just swept the Mariners, good start to the month of May…Really what needs to happen here is they need their bats to wake up and get some consistent pitching…Between Cano and Giambi not hitting, A-Rod, Jorge, and Hughes on the shelf, and the inconsistent pitching (outside of Wang and Pettite), this is going to be a unique year full of surprises…And they may not be all the fine and dandy ones that us Yankee fans are used to. But alas, the season is 162 games long. There is still tons of time, so not all doom and gloom here. Hughes being out until July is killer b/c the Yanks were relying on his arm as well as Ian Kennedy (who was sent to the minors yesterday)…The hitting will definitely come around, it always does when you have this amount of talent in a lineup…But the pitching will only take us so far…How far? That will remain to be seen…Hopefully the mix of oldies and young’ins will lead us to the playoffs and from there, it’s a whole differnet ballgame…
P.S. This year’s AL East is shaking out pretty solid… I know it’s only the beginning of May, but the Jays are in last and only 4 games out. The O’s, Jays, and Rays aren’t teams to walk all over anymore…

The Mets today defeated the Diamondbacks by a score of 5-2, and won the weekend series in Arizona. This was great job bouncing back for the Mets after what happen last week. Hopefully this is the turn around the Mets need to start playing baseball like they can. Delgado seems to be heating up as does Reyes…..Good to see Alou and Schiender back and playing well. Winning the series against one of the better teams in the league is very nice to see, lets hope they can keep it up when they take on the Dodgers

The Celtics came ready to play today…From the opening tip on…Although Joe Johnson hitting a trey on the opening ATL possession had me panicking (I panic, what can I say?)…After that the C’s put the clamps on…The Hawks were lucky to get to 65 points, and I mean real lucky…They honestly should have had about 50. This was as dominating a performance as they have put in this entire year, and they now need to get geared up to face Lebron and some old friends (Delonte, Wally)…It should be a great series…Starts @ 8pm on Tuesday night…Lets keep The Garden rockin’! Go Celtics!
