Marc Stein: D’Antoni accepts offer, chooses Knicks over Bulls….SAY IT AIN’T SO!!!

nba_g_mdantoni_651.jpgThe much heavily speculated rumor of former Phoenix Suns coach Mike D’Antoni became a reality as of late Friday night as the proven coach who was also sought by the Bulls, has accepted a four-year, $24 million deal to take over the Knicks, according to reports by Sports Illustrated and The Boston Globe, both citing a league source. At first glance one might become overly ecstatic or overjoyed that such a successful proven coach will have the reign of power for the Knicks.

However, upon a closer look I for one, (and I’m sure I’m not the only one to feel this way) must beg the question “do the Knicks need a strictly offensive minded coach like D’Antoni with the current cast of under-achievers they currently have on their roster?” Don’t get me wrong I think D’Antoni is a great coach as evident through his track record 267-172 career coaching record with the Suns and Nuggets, but the cast of players he had on those team, as with most western conference teams were highly athletic up-tempo style offenses. Moreover, as we all remember the last time we brought in a high profile coach and through a lot of money at with much experience, see; Larry Brown, failed miserably and let me remind you he was a defensive minded coach. So here we are, with a Larry Brown caliber coach who is offensive minded and you expect the Knicks to be better?

The Knicks were better off hiring Mark Jackson, a New York guy who has played for the Knicks in the glory days as well as the rival Pacers. Similar to the gem in the rough, Jeff Van Gundy, Jackson has the potential IMO to be a defensive minded expert of a coach while being more of a player coach something Van Gundy was not. That might seem like a oxymoron but I do believe Jackson could of restored a sense of pride in the Knick players which many of them never had, see; Eddy Curry. Being a player coach, he could of broken through the barrier and made them understand, I’m sorry but I just don’t see D’Antoni doing that. Not to mention that could of had Mark Jackson at a substantially lower price, as D’Antoni is now the 3rd highest paid active coach. The knicks are still paying former coaches Isiah Thomas and Larry Brown, not to mention Lenny Wilkins or Don Chaney. Right now the Knicks are at rock bottom, so desperate times call for desperate drastic measures. The Knicks should of said to themselves, what’s the worst thing that could happen if they hire Jackson, I mean it really can’t get any worst for em so you might as well test it as D’Antoni just doesn’t fit the style of the current Knick players and as we know you can’t get rid of all 15 players, usually the coach is the first to go. As sick as it makes me, mark my words, next year at this time, D’Antoni’s camp will be negotiating a buyout with the Knicks as the Celtics will be working for their two-peat title, working towards a dynasty.
