Manny to LA
31. July 2008 by gchacko.
The Globe’s Gordon Edes just reported that a deal has gone down with Manny Ramirez. Nick Cafardo reported that the Dodgers were Manny’s believed landing spot.
Cafardo also reported that he thinks the Red Sox may have landed Jason Bay from the Pirates as part of a three-team deal between the Red Sox, Pirates, and Dodgers.
SI.com is also reporting that Manny has been dealt to the Dodgers, with the Pirates getting four minor leaguers in the three-way trade.
Deadline Approaching
31. July 2008 by rich.
Here we go…Contributions from George and Rich:
- Jason Bay is supposedly on his way to the Rays for Minor League prospects including shortstop Reid Brignac and right-hander Jeff Niemann.
- That would have a domino effect on the Manny deal, meaning the Manny deal is all but off. Unless the Rays and Sox make a deal…Highly unlikely being in the same division.
- The Yankees are still looking for bullpen help and a starting pitcher.
- The D-Backs have checked in on Adam Dunn and reportedly have offered Chad Tracy.
- The Mets are talking to the Nats about reliever Luis Ayala.
- The Rays supposedly have a deal for Reds slugger Adam Dunn waiting on the back burner, but those reports have been refuted.
- Odds are the Yankees will not acquire Washburn before 4pm, but the odds of him clearing waivers and landing with the Yanks after this non-waiver deadline, those odds change significantly…
- Fuentes will be staying put with the Rockies.
- Marlins have acquired Arthur Rhodes from the Mariners for pitcher Gaby Hernandez.
- Blue Jays are the only team talking Ibanez.
- Yanks and Red Sox are battling it out for Cubbies RP Scott Eyre.
- Ibanez is staying with the Mariners. Evidently they changed their minds.
- 5 minutes left…No new news…
- 2 minute warning…
- Deadline has come and gone…I believe if any deals are in the final stages of being worked out, they are given time to get it done…Stay tuned!!!
- The Rays pursuit of Bay may be off. “Unless a miracle occurs,” one source is quoted as saying.
The Manny Watch Continued…
31. July 2008 by gchacko.
So far, the Dodgers, D-backs, Phillies and Mets are all reportedly interested in acquiring Ramirez. Now we can throw the Marlins into the mix,
which means just about every NL team with a legitimate shot at the playoffs that hasn’t already made a big trade is in the hunt.
The latest rumor drawing a lot of attention is:
Marlins get: Manny Ramirez, cash, prospect from Red Sox
Red Sox get: Jason Bay, John Grabow
Pirates get: Ryan Tucker, Jeremy Hermida, one prospect from Red Sox, perhaps another prospect from Marlins.
There is no tentative agreement between the Red Sox, Pirates, and Marlins.
- Boston Herald this morning wrote that the idea of the Red Sox trading Ramirez “continues to be more fantasy than fact.” It’s fun to play GM, though, and imagine where big-name players might end up. I think that’s what we’re dealing with in all these reported trade talks — possible scenarios, rather than likely destinations.
- Peter Gammons does not think Manny will be traded.
- Red Sox players took a wait-and-see approach Wednesday night to reports that Manny Ramirez could get traded before Thursday’s deadline.
“Every year this is like this,” catcher Jason Varitek said after Boston’s 9-2 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. “It’s totally out of our hands. I just think this team needs to take a step past this and start playing good baseball.”
Griffey to White Sox: Done Deal

The Reds have traded Griffey to the White Sox, and he has approved the deal.
The Reds will receive pitcher Nick Masset and infielder Danny Richar in return, but that couldn’t immediately be confirmed.
Griffey is batting .245 this season with a .355 OBP, 15 HR and 53 RBI in 359 at-bats.
It remains to be seen where he will fit in the lineup of Quentin in left, Swisher in center, Dye in right, Konerko at 1B, and Thome at DH. Odds are he will spell each of the OF’s and Thome at DH.
The hot rumor is Griffey may be tried out at 1B. I guess Konerko’s down year really has them…Well, down. The Sox may also move a guy like a Nick Swisher for some pitching help.
Manny to Green Bay???
31. July 2008 by JJK.

Manny Ramirez looks like he’s headed to Greenbay. Manny is entertaining and it’s never a dull moment with him on your team, but he has become an overwhelming distraction to Boston. He’s either going to be traded or help Boston win another World Series. Look for the former. Read article below for trade rumors.
Manny a Marlin???
31. July 2008 by gchacko.
Multiple baseball sources saying the Red Sox are in “serious conversations” with the Marlins about Ramirez. A deal that
would send Ramirez to Florida for three players, including outfielder Mike Stanton.
One good claims that the Marlins were willing to give up Jeremy Hermida, Jeff Allison.
According to Buster Olney on ESPN.com, “The Red Sox are engaged in serious conversations to trade Manny Ramirez to the Florida Marlins, as well as other teams.”
Close or not its the first inning and Manny is still in the lineup.
Yanks get pudge
31. July 2008 by gchacko.
In a surprise move, the Yankees have acquired catcher Ivan Rodriguez from the Tigers for Kyle Farnsworth according to Buster Olney. The move should save Detroit about $2.6MM and could help their ‘pen.
Around the majors…
30. July 2008 by gchacko.
ESPN’s Andrew Marchand says the deadline for a Manny trade might be 3pm CST today, as he has to sign paperwork 24 hours prior to a deal to waive his no-trade rights. I have also read that radio callers in Boston are asking for a Mannny for Beltran deal…
- According to SI.com’s Jon Heyman the Rays, Mets, D’Backs, and Cardinals are also in the Jason bay chase.
- According to Ken Rosenthal, the Mets are not the only ones interested in Ibanez, apparently the Cubs have checked in on him… however, as of now the asking price for Ibanez is still too high.
- Scott Miller of CBSSports.com is reporting that Maddux has rejected the trade request by the GM to the Phillies.
- Royals outfielder José Guillen denied an online report by ESPNdeportes.com that surfaced Tuesday claiming he wants out of Kansas City because of a fractured relationship with manager Trey Hillman.
- John Maine’s rotator cuff strain has the Mets looking at pitching. Graziano suggests names like Livan Hernandez, Paul Byrd, and Jarrod Washburn.
- Gregg Zaun is unhappy about his reduced role with the Blue Jays, and has asked the team to try trading him before Thursday’s deadline.
- The Marlins could be closer to a deal to acquire left-handed reliever Arthur Rhodes from the Seattle Mariners, who are looking only for a midlevel minor-league prospect in return.
Artest set to join T-Mac and Yao
30. July 2008 by gchacko.
The Houston Rockets have reached an agreement to acquire forward Ron Artest from the Sacramento Kings, the Houston Chronicle is reporting.
The Rockets will give up guard Bobby Jackson, a No. 1 draft pick next season and another player that the individual with knowledge of the trade could not name.
It is believed that rookie Donte Greene is included in the deal, which will prevent the deal from going through until August 14, when Greene is able to be dealt.
There could also be other players involved to make the money match but none that the Rockets would plan to keep. The Rockets will also send the Kings cash in excess of $1 million.
Tex to Angels
30. July 2008 by gchacko.

Sources close to the situation told ESPN.com’s Jayson Stark on Tuesday that Atlanta Braves first baseman Mark Teixeira is headed to the Los Angeles Angels for Casey Kotchman and minor league pitcher Steven Marek.
Kotchman was pulled off the field during pregame warmups at Fenway Park on Tuesday afternoon, further fueling speculation that a deal was in place.
