K-Rod, Mets come to terms

According Jon Heyman at SI.com the Mets are close to signing closer Fransico Rodriguez.

Rodriguez, who turns 27 next month, saved a Major League-record 62 games last season, and Kinzer, the agent for K-Rod,  opened the bidding for him earlier this offseason at five years and $75 million. He has since backed off those weighty demands. People familiar with the discussions told SI.com that the deal is likely to be for three years and about $37 million.

Update 3:32pm

The Mets have signed K-Rod to a 3 year deal with a vesting option for a fourth.

3. Pittsburgh Steelers  (5-2)    -   Both losses coming to NFC East teams. Pittsburgh is still right there in the AFC

4. Washington Redskins  (6-2)   -  Little bit of trouble with the Lions, but a win is a win. Redskins keep pace with New York.

5. Carolina Panthers (6-2) -  Playing really good football right now. Look to be on their way to a NFC South title.

6.    New England Patriots (5-2) -  The Rams gave them quite a game, but the Pats are once again atop the AFC East. Not bad for a team without Tom Brady.

7. Buffalo Bills     (5-2)  -  Waiting to week 8 to play your first division game is strange. The loss to the Dolphins doesn’t seem as bad this year as say last year.

8. Dallas Cowboys  (5-3)    -   Defense won this game. The defense showed what they can do when they play well. Big game in New York this week, will Brad Johnson or Brooks Bollinger be the starter.

9.   Tampa Bay Buccaneers  (5-3)   -   Tough loss in Dallas, offense was held to zero TDs. The Bucs are still right there in the NFC playoff picture.

10. Arizona Cardinals(4-3)    -    Played a great game in Carolina, but came up a little short. This team is still a little bit away, but watch out.

World Series: Rays - 1 Phillies - 1

The Tampa Bay Rays evened up the World Series last night at a game a piece by beating the Phillies 4-2. The Rays did so with small ball, scoring 3 of their runs on outs, and a little help from the umpires.

In the second inning Phillies starter Brett Myers, working with a 3-2 count, threw a slider low and off the plate to  Rocco Baldelli, who attempted to check his swing. Home plate umpire Kerwin Danley raised his hand as if he was going to call strike three, but he pointed to first, either to check with firstbase umpire Fieldin Culbreth or to indicate Baldelli checked his swing on ball four and should take his base.

“I didn’t think I went [around], and I just went to first,” said Baldelli, who had already started to jog down the line as Danley raised his arm. “I was facing [toward the field], so I didn’t see what was going on behind me. Kerwin asked for help down the first-base line, and as I was jogging to first, they said, ‘No swing.’ It was OK. I looked at it on film later and it didn’t look like I went. I thought the call was right.”

Baldelli’s walk lead to a run for the Rays.

Another call in the 9th inning really helped the Rays. With the Rays leading 4-1 in the top of the ninth Jimmy Rollins came to the plate with a runner on second and no out. David Price’s pitch appeared to graze Rollins uniform. Danley did not agree and did not award Rollins first base. Replays confirmed that the pitch did in fact hit Rollins uniform which is considered a hit by pitch and he should have been awarded first base. Rollins would eventually pop out to short. The Phillies would get one run in the inning before Price closed them out for a Rays win.

Can’t say I feel bad for the Phillies, sometimes you just don’t get all the breaks.

Phucking Phillies

According to Mat Cerrone over at MetsBlog,

During last night’s telecast, FoxSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal relayed the following story…

In Game 2 of the NLDS against the Brewers, Shane Victorino hit a walk-off grand slam, after which he raised his finger in the air as he ran around the bases.

Prior to the next game, a picture of Victorino, running the bases, with his finger in the air, was taped to his locker by his teammates with ‘J. Reyes’ written above it.

I hate the the Phillies.

Roy Williams traded to Cowboys

The Detroit Lions have traded Roy Williams to the Cowboys for a first, third and sixth round pick. The Cowboys will also receive Detroit’s 2009 seventh round pick. The Cowboys will also now have the Titan’s 2009 fifth round pick because Adam Jones has been suspended.

The Cowboys signed Williams to a 5-year extension through 2014.

NFL suspends Cowboys CB Jones for a minimum of four games

According to NFL.com

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam Jones indefinitely without pay, for a minimum of four games, on Tuesday for violating the league’s Personal Conduct Policy.

Jones will miss at least the next four games. Goodell will determine the final length of the suspension following the Cowboys’ Week 11 game against Washington on Nov. 16. The decision on whether Jones can return to play will be based on his strict compliance with his NFL and Dallas Cowboys treatment plans as well as on evaluations of his progress that will be provided to Goodell by clinical experts retained by the NFL.
