Tatum Bell Stole Rudi Johnson’s Bags?!

Newly signed Lions RB Rudi Johnson says his luggage was taken from the team’s facility by newly released RB and now FA Tatum Bell.

Johnson was waived by Cincinnati last week and signed a free-agent contact with the Lions on Monday. The two bags were taken from the team’s headquarters during Johnson’s meeting with GM Matt Millen.

The empty bags were returned Tuesday evening.  Empty as in Johnson is still missing $200, his ID, credit cards and clothes.

Johnson has contacted Bell and hopes not to have to involve the police.

Patrick Ewing to the Knicks!

Patrick Ewing Jr. that is.  The Knicks acquired the son of the former Knick legend on Friday from the Houston Rockets for…drum roll please…the rights to notorious 1999 first-round pick Frederic Weis.  Yes, the same Frederic Weis the Knicks took in ‘99 over Ron Artest.

Ewing Jr. finished his studies at Georgetown this past Spring.  He was selected by the Kings in the 2nd round of the ‘08 draft.  He was then moved in the Ron Artest deal to the Rockets.  Now he is headed in his fathers footsteps…Again.

Notes: Ewing Sr’s #33 is retired in the Knick rafters.  But he said if his son ever became a Knick, he would let him wear it.

Huge Series For Yankees

The Yankees begin a huge 3 game series tonight against the Boston Red Sox.  They are 5 GB the Sox for the wild card and 3.5 GB the Twins who are battling with the ChiSox which is a whole other hurdle for the Yanks being that the loser of that division is right in the thick of the wild card race as well.  This could be do-or-die for the Yankees.  Win 2/3 or sweep, and they are still in the thick of things.  Get swept or lose the series, things are looking down.  This is the most important 3 games of the year thus far.  Anytime you can beat the team that’s ahead of you in the standings and get that full game, it is money.

Here are the pitching probables for the series starting tonight in the Bronx:

Notes: There are 32 games left in the Yankees regular season.

Adam Dunn to the D-Backs

Adam Dunn (and his Will Ferrellness) has been traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks.  In exchange for Dunn, Cincinnati will receive minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and two other players to be named later.

Dunn has long rumored to have been on the block, and the D-Backs finally stepped up and got a deal done.  Dunn is tied for the ML lead with 32 homers.  Although he has a .233 average, he can hit the ball a long way, drive people in, and gets on base a lot with an OBP of .373.

The D-Backs are currently 1.5 games ahead of the Joe Torre led Dodgers in the NL West.

This will provide a HUGE boost to their offense.  Great deal for Arizona, the same for Cincinnati as they look to the future.

The UFL Football League

The United Football League (UFL) is scheduled to “open” in the 2009 season with 6 teams: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford.

Familiar faces, Mark Cuban and the Wilpon group of NY, will be at least two of the owners.

There’s clearly lots of risk with these start up leagues, just ask Vince McMahon about the XFL.

One way that UFL commish Michael Huyghue hopes to soften the competition?  According to Michael there’s a “98 percent” chance that a team in the UFL signs Mike Vick.  That would be Vick’s way of showing he has put his past behind him before making a leap back into the NFL scene.

Interesting note: The New York team is said to be playing its home games at the Mets new home, Citi Field.  Lets see how happy the Mets are with their field being torn up during a pennant race in September/October…

Josh Smith to the Grizz??

Josh Smith has signed a 5 year $58 offer sheet with the Memphis Grizzlies.  Smith is a restricted free agent meaning the Hawks can match ANY offer to him.  They have 7 days to do so.

The Hawks have publicly stated they will match any and every offer to the young Smith.

Smith is 22 years old, 6′9″ and 235 lbs.  He led the Hawks to a playoff berth last year in which they took the NBA Champion Celtics to 7 games in the first round, only to lose.

This offer comes as a surprise to many.  Although reports surfaced a few weeks back that a mystery team may be hot on his heels…Mystery team revealed.

Stay tuned.

Watching the Mets is Like…

I read this on a Jets website I read quite frequently, and I just thought it was kind of funny and thought everyone would get a chuckle out of it…No harm intended, just good natured sharing of something I found.

“watching the mets is like having a psycho girlfriend who owns in bed.”

Favre to the Jets

Brett Favre has been traded to the NY Jets for a conditional draft pick.  The pick is believed to be a 4th rounder, with the possibility of it escalating to a 2nd rounder depending on both Favre’s and the Jets performance.

More to come…

Updated: For a Conditional 4th round pick:

  • Goes to 3rd if Favre plays 50% or more of offensive plays
  • Goes to 2nd if Favre plays 70% or more of offensive plays + Jets make playoffs
  • Goes to 1st if Favre plays 80% or more of offensive plays + Jets Superbowl appearance. And Favre has to play in 50% of the plays in playoffs.
