Tatum Bell Stole Rudi Johnson’s Bags?!

Newly signed Lions RB Rudi Johnson says his luggage was taken from the team’s facility by newly released RB and now FA Tatum Bell.

Johnson was waived by Cincinnati last week and signed a free-agent contact with the Lions on Monday. The two bags were taken from the team’s headquarters during Johnson’s meeting with GM Matt Millen.

The empty bags were returned Tuesday evening.  Empty as in Johnson is still missing $200, his ID, credit cards and clothes.

Johnson has contacted Bell and hopes not to have to involve the police.

A Giant hurt!

The Giants received some terrible news and a huge blow to the pass rush game. Osi Umenyiora will miss the upcoming season with a torn lateral meniscus in his left knee, suffered during Saturday’s preseason game against the Jets.

Although it is a far fetched theory, there is some speculation that the Giants will try to bring Strahan out of retirement. Strahan is the new analyst for FOX and is currently vacationing in Greece.

“Someone has already raised that with me today, and I haven’t really talked to anyone at this point in time about anything, to be honest with you,” said Coughlin. “I am sure that Jerry Reese and I and ownership will look long and hard at whatever options are out there and do what is best.”

The UFL Football League

The United Football League (UFL) is scheduled to “open” in the 2009 season with 6 teams: Los Angeles, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Orlando, New York and Hartford.

Familiar faces, Mark Cuban and the Wilpon group of NY, will be at least two of the owners.

There’s clearly lots of risk with these start up leagues, just ask Vince McMahon about the XFL.

One way that UFL commish Michael Huyghue hopes to soften the competition?  According to Michael there’s a “98 percent” chance that a team in the UFL signs Mike Vick.  That would be Vick’s way of showing he has put his past behind him before making a leap back into the NFL scene.

Interesting note: The New York team is said to be playing its home games at the Mets new home, Citi Field.  Lets see how happy the Mets are with their field being torn up during a pennant race in September/October…

Chad to Dolphins

Chad Pennington, cut by the New York Jets after the team traded for Brett Favre, signed with the Miami Dolphins on Friday. The 32-year-old Pennington, expected to be the starting quarterback for Miami, agreed to a deal Friday worth $11.5 million over two years, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move hasn’t been officially announced.

Chad Pennington, QB
Height: 6-3
Weight: 225
College: Marshall
Experience: 8
“We are neither confirming nor denying the report,” Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said Friday night.

Bill Parcells, now the Dolphins’ vice president of football operations, drafted Pennington with the 18th overall pick in 2000 when he was the Jets’ general manager.

The Dolphins, coming off a 1-15 season, will open the season against the Jets in Miami, giving Pennington an immediate chance to face his former team.

Before the signing, Pennington said he was disappointed but had no hard feelings after being released by the Jets.”I have enjoyed it,” Pennington said Friday in his first public comments since his release. “I’ve learned a lot, become a better professional and a better man because of my experience and my time in New York. I don’t regret or feel ashamed about anything that happened to me in my time in New York.”

Favre Update Again…

According to ESPN News a deal to Tampa is in the works.  Multiple outlets have reported that both the Bucs and Jets are still in the hunt for the Hall of Fame QB’s services.  The ties with GB have been severed.  Favre will either be traded or have to stay home.

The latest rumors have the Bucs and Jets both offering unknown packages.  The Jets apparently have the better offer on the table, but the Bucs are a more preferential location for Favre, especially due to 3 things: the offense, Jon Gruden, and the fact that Tampa Bay plays Green Bay Week 4.  Also because apparently Favre does not want to play in NY.  Although him speaking to both the Bucs and Jets now is a different tune than what was playing last week.

On the flip side, the Jets are the preferred location for GB to send Favre as they won’t have to deal with him, unless both teams make the SuperBowl.

This story has taken so many twists, who knows what to expect next.  Personally I have never heard so many reporters from the big networks being asked their prediction of the outcome, and so many saying they honestly have no idea.

Stay tuned.

Favre Update

Sunday we were told there would be an open QB competition in Green Bay once Brett Favre returned. Sorry Aaron Rodgers.

Yesterday we witnessed a media frenzy on all sports outlets as Favre returned to GB and got off his plane and drove himself from the airport. All I wanted to do was turn on ESPN News to get scores, not here about Brett Favre all day.

Today, after hearing that the two sides have met for hours on end since he has arrived, Favre has said he wants to be released. Can we just end this already?

Update (8/5/08 @ 7:22pm): ESPN News is reporting the Bucs are in talks w. the Pack regarding a Favre trade.  Stay tuned.

The Favre Saga…

The Brett Favre saga continues…The Bucs and Jets are the hot rumored teams to be in the hunt for his services.  Both have some issues with their current QB situation.  The Jets have a seasoned vet and probably one of, if not the, smartest QB in the league, but with a weak arm, in Chad Pennington and a young, but not as ’smart’ QB with a stellar arm in Kellen Clemens.  The Bucs have seasoned vet Jeff Garcia and young gun Chris Simms, along with another vet in Brian Griese.

As you can see, each team has a lot to be desired at the QB position.

Favre wants to be released.  Green Bay will not allow it, because odds are he will end up with the Vikings or Bears, whom the Pack play twice a year.  No thanks.

The Packers want to ship him out of the NFC, preferably to a team that they could only face if they both make it to the Superbowl…They want no way to allow him to come back and nip them in the butt, for lack of a better analogy.

Favre did not report to camp on Sunday, as previously reported.  He and GM Ted Thompson spoke, and Favre agreed to give him a few more days to figure this situation out.

In strange news, Peter King reported yesterday the Jets may visit Favre in Mississippi…The Jets then mysteriously canceled both of their practices today.

Giants Trade Shockey To New Orleans

SI.com - Jeremy Shockey was traded to the Saints for two draft picks Monday.

The Giants will receive second- and fifth-round picks in the 2009 draft. The deal must be approved by the league and is contingent on Shockey passing a physical.

Shockey, a four-time Pro Bowl selection who spent six seasons with the Giants, broke his leg against the Washington Redskins on Dec. 16.

Bradshaw Admits He Used Steroids In 1970s

Legendary quarterback Terry Bradshaw admitted last week that he used steroids during his playing days with the Steelers in the 1970s, according to The New York Daily News. The interview took place with Sports Illustrated’s Dan Patrick, during which Bradshaw did not specific what type of performance-enhancers he took.

“We did steroids to get away the aches and the speed of healing,” Bradshaw said. “My use of steroids from a doctor was to speed up injury, and thought nothing of it … It was to speed up the healing process, that was it. It wasn’t to get bigger and stronger and faster.”
