Phelpsian era!

Michael Phelps did the expected. He was perfect as he won his eighth gold medal in eight attempts. Phelps now has two gold medal records: more gold medals in a single Olympics than any other athlete in any sport, and more gold medals (14) in an Olympics career.

“I have dreamed of a lot of things. And I have written down a lot of goals. And this was the biggest one I really ever wrote down. And everything was accomplished. It has been a fun last four years. And it has been one fun week. That is for sure,” said Phelps after the event.

The eighth Phelpsian achievement of the Michael Phelps Games came during the butterfly leg of the 400 medley relay. Phelps dove into the water with the American team in third place. He was still in third at the flip turn, but once he got those arms churning he made it a faster 100 meters than the world record time. At the wall, Phelps had the lead and freestyler Jason Lezak then sealed the deal in the final 100 meters. The American team broke the world record by a little more than a second, giving Phelps the record gold medal haul.

Even though Phelps made history with his 8th gold medal, none of the events compared to the magnificent finish Saturday for his seventh medal by the narrowest of margins in the 100-meter butterfly.

Cavic, whose team protested the result and thought he should share the gold, said: “Losing by one-hundredth of a second is the most difficult thing to accept, especially in an Olympic final.”

Phelps, Greatest Olympian in History?

Micheal Phelps won his 4th and 5th gold medals yesterday of the Beijing Olympic Games. This gives him 11 career gold medals more than anyone in history. Everyone wanted to get a look at history, including the U.S. men’s basketball team. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony were among those cheering on Phelps from poolside seats. Phelps will compete in 3 more events going for a record 8 gold medals in one Olympics. He’ll swim in the 200 individual medley, 100 fly and 400 medley relay. He his the favorite to get the gold in all those events. Phelps, already considered the greatest swimmer ever, plans to increase his gold medal count in the 2012 Games in London.

US mens make a statement against the Chinese

After a tight first quarter of Chinese three-pointers raining from the sky and fans cheering at full blast, the United States outclassed and out-dunked their hosts to a 101-70 victory in day one of the Olympic Men’s Basketball tournament. No one could deny the excitement when center Yao Ming put the first points on the board with a beautiful downtown three-pointer, giving a preview of China’s game strategy of playing deep. Twelve of China’s first 14 points came from behind the arc, and were sunk by different players around the key.

The United States’ first basket was also emblematic of their style, a defiant Dwight Howard dunk off a Kobe Bryant assist. While the first quarter saw several lead changes, it came to a definitive end with two made free throws by Miami Heat shooting guard Dwayne Wade and another dunk from center Howard to come out of a tied score to a 20-16 United States lead at the end of the period.

Guard Dwyane Wade, who has played the role of sixth man for the Americans, led the team in scoring with 19 points.LeBron James added 18 points and pulled down six rebounds, while swingman Kobe Bryant poured in 13 points.Yao Ming — the Houston Rockets centre and one of China’s few NBA players — was somewhat quiet in his first game, leading his team with a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.

An olympic tragedy-

A Chinese man attacked the two Americans — a man and a woman and their Chinese tourist guide — around 12:20 p.m. on the second level of the Drum Tower, a popular tourist attraction in north Beijing.

Citing the Beijing Municipal Government Information Office, the 47-year-old attacker, Tang Yongming, killed the American man and injured both the American woman and the female guide. The attacker was identified by an identity card found on the body.Tang then “killed himself by jumping from the second story of the Drum Tower.

A subsequent USOC statement identified the murder victim as Todd Bachman , father-in-law of U.S. men’s indoor volleyball head coach Hugh McCutcheon and father of McCutcheon’s wife, 2004 U.S. Olympic women’s indoor volleyball player Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon. Bachman’s wife Barbara is in a local hospital with life-threatening injuries, and representatives of USOC and the U.S. Embassy are assisting the family at the hospital. Elisabeth Bachman McCutcheon was with them at the time of the attack and was not injured.

The attack happened shortly after midday, according to the statement from USOC. Johnson, his wife and numerous baseball players were at the silk fair — a popular tourist destination — all wearing street clothes. Darryl Seibel, a spokesman for USOC, said the victims of the attack were not wearing anything that identified them as Americans or as part of an Olympic delegation.

LET THE GAMES BEIJING!

Fireworks explode over the National Stadium during the Opening Ceremony for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on August 8, 2008 in Beijing, China. America can watch it on NBC beginning at 7:30 ET.

Gender check in the olympics

For more than a year, officials in Beijing have been designing a special laboratory to determine the sex of any athletes taking part in this year’s Olympic games. “Suspected athletes will be evaluated from their external appearances by experts and undergo blood tests to examine their sex hormones, genes and chromosomes for sex determination,” says Professor Tian Qinjie. The tests will not be conducted on every female athlete, but will be required if serious doubts have been raised about an individual competitor - invariably one competing in the women’s events. “The aim is to …
